Huie unravels the tragedy of Eddie Slovik, a 24-year-old foot soldier executed in 1945 and the first American shot for desertion since the 1800s. Although Slovik was guilty, Huie's 1954 title reveals him to be a kid from the school of hard knocks, who when thrust into combat just couldn't kill. Although the military initially suppressed the information, Huie had the army's full cooperation during his research. Gut-wrenching.
