Beginning in the 1960s, this book tells of the real life adventures of the author as a boy. Encouraged by his parents to become more independent, Peter decided to see how far he could get in his family's small open dinghy Calypso. Calypso was a wayfarer, a small and very popular class of open dinghy; a boat designed for pottering around coastlines. But along with the occasional brave crewmate, Peter managed to sail her across the Channel, through the Bay of Biscay, down the French canals and into the Mediterranean, then up into the North Sea and the Baltic to Oslo, living aboard for three months at a time.

Listeners travel across years and seas with author Peter Clutterbuck in his improbably small dinghy, Calypso, on voyages that he admits his older, more experienced, self would never have tried. Malk Williams's narration starts with Peter's boyhood row across the English Channel and recounts his ever increasing desire to best each of his records. His goals culminate in the longest-ever trip made in a Wayfarer class open dinghy, which takes more than three months. Sailing fans and people interested in survival and adventure stories will have much to learn here as Williams details the careful provisioning of the craft and the many dangers Clutterbuck encounters at sea. Williams's calm, measured tones belie the difficulties--from rudder breakages and dismastings to hallucinations. E.J.F. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
